A great blue heron was standing there, eyeing the eggs, and they thought those eggs were surely doomed. While in the mountains daytime temps range from the 40's to 60's, and owling typically drops into the 40's. Every bend in the road presents a glimpse of Mountain Bluebird, jays, and song birds of every description and size. Blue Heron and Egret are also found in the area. When we went to Las Vegas to make bird videos, Non Birding Bill saw one and when he pointed it out, the lazuli bunting flew away and all I saw was a small bird flashing blue. Stewart Lake State Waterfowl Management Area is just south of Jensen and adjacent to the river (just look for the signs). The lure here is habitat, with vast expanses of open water, brackish wetlands, fresh-water marshes, and playas. City Creek Canyon is walking distance from downtown Salt Lake City, yet it is one of the best songbird areas in the state. I wouldn't do anything like that, but what if I inadvertently startled it? As I was living la vie da lazuli, I suddenly heard a heavy "thump, thump, thump" and it sounded like an ungulate in full trot mode right behind me. Visitors to Swaner this spring will also see shorebirds and waterfowl like the American coot and the spotted sandpiper, as well as birds of prey.
It was a challenge getting any photos because the birds were in the shade and my camera didn't want to give me the shutter speed I needed. Each of Utah's National Parks offers excellent birding.
